Why did we think the bed deliverers would assemble it for us?
Took me about 3anarf hours...
Oak's quite heavy, isn't it?
...and so is the steel lifty-up frame
I ache.
I just might have a drink tonight, if I can stay awake long enough to pour it.

I think you have to tell them you want it doing.

When I put up my single beds, I had trouble doing it alone cos my arms aren't 6ft long and the bedroom isn't big enough to stand behind the headboard and screw in a 6" bolt. Now it's in there, it's staying in there until I find someone to help dismantle it!

Prolly. You'd think they'd ask in the shop if you'd like to pay a bit extra to have it done, but maybe they find that reduces the likelihood of a sale.

Not if you can't do it yourself. Obv, when Ma had her new bed, she had it all set up by the delivery blokes and the old one taken away. Otherwise it would have been Bro & me at the weekend, cursing and swearing and trying to get the old one in the back of the car to go to the tip.

I would have thought they would assemble it too.

I'm glad to know what happened because we're thinking of getting Charles a new IKEA bed. Your was IKEA, wasn't it?

Our beds came from Ikea. The delivery men weren't amused at the steps up to the front door and refused to even consider the idea of helping us to get the things upstairs once inside. I suggest you think very carefully about Ikea if you're going to want service like that, or rope in some helpful neighbours instead. You can pretty well guarantee that the driver and his mate won't want to help you at all - and they'll probably quote health and bloody safety to support their position.

One of our delivery men was a scouser, the other spotted the Whitstable Juggling Convention pass and said he used to live there. I said we'd had a romantic weekend there and he said "How? It's Whitstable"

Unless IKEA have changed their policies since the last time I had stuff delivered (prolly about 7 years ago), it isn't they who deliver. You have to buy the stuff then take it round the corner to the on site delivery firm, who are only contracted to cart it to your door and dump it inside the house. For which you pay a fair amount of dosh.

The beds came in a big Ikea truck, and yes it was expensive. Trouble was, we had no way of getting the beds home ourselves even with the help of a friend and his van, because they don't come apart at all. And they weigh a ton. Each.

No, we were heading for a Comet to look at fridgefreezers and happened to pass Dreams so popped in and L saw one she rather liked, so we went back next week (or next day, it's been a bit of a blur lately) and she still liked it, so...

It hinges up so you can get at the storage space underneath, but this means the base needs to be heavy so it stays still while you do that and the lifty bit is pretty heavy too.
We paid a good deal less than the price on that page, got the last day of their sale or something [edit: about 50 quid more than that total for bed, mattress, protector, pillows]. They'll have another sale soon I'm sure! Plus a pocket spring memory foam mattress, mattress protector, and new pillows (also memory foam iirc, or something special anyway)
I wouldn't advise anybody with any history of back problems to try assembling this thing (oops...) and they're serious about the bits where it says it needs two people (oops...)
Still, solid oak headboard. Looks great.

What were you and [livejournal.com profile] k425 up to that meant you needed a new bed? I think we should be told.

The bed we've had for about 5 years comprised a divan we got off a mate and a mattress from IKEA that was a slightly different size. And we were well fed up with it, frankly.
