I went to the trouble of finding the Halifax cheque book to pay the IKEA bill, and the guy in the Halifax said Oh sorry we're not in Bank Giro Credit. And everybody else would charge.

I have never paid a bill like that in the bank except the old Mastercard because it was a Lloyds card.

Stick it in the post - or wait till I get home and we'll see if we can set up electronic transfer like we have with Egg and M&S.

Didn't realize people still used bank giro credit at all. I'm tempted to suggest [livejournal.com profile] oldbloke might like to pay by postal order.

I've stuck with handing over a bill and a cheque in a bank branch as I get a nice stamped piece of paper proving I paid it that way.
I assume there's something odd about either the Halifax or IKEA - or both.

I do that too, for the same reason, but using my debit card instead of a cheque - except for bills from BT, who dragooned their customers into setting up direct debits, with a fine of £18 per year for failing to do so (I cannot believe that it costs BT £18 extra per customer per year to accept payments in any other way).

Sometimes I pay at the Post Office using cash or cheque, which was still free to do the last time I did it that way.

I pay physical cash & cheques into my bank at the Post Office. Everything else I do online.
