'II's first attempt at a sponge was a genoa, possibly one of the most difficult types of cake to make. It ended up as thick and dense as a piece of roofing slate and tasted like a sweet-ish omelette gone stale. Sadly, we didn't know anyone with chickens at the time; we tried it plain, toasted, toasted with jam, the lot, and it was all too triste...

and he stopped trying, poor lamb! Don't you go that road, you have another go, you'll get there.
