Thought I'd have a proper look at this bike I was gifted before shelling out for the local bike shop to make it roadworthy while telling me it's a heap of junk.
Back wheel's totally shagged - broken and bent spokes all over the place. So it'd need a new wheel as well as tubes and tyres, maybe a chain, the cogs on the back set don't look that great either.
I might be better off just giving Halford's a few nicker for a heap of junk that I can actually ride right now

Depends on the quality of the 2ndhand bike. A new back wheel with mech and chain will probably set you back less than 50 quid, and if the bike's decent that is totally worth it. (Rog got a new block on the back wheel of his spare bike, with fitting, for 18 quid last week. Wheel would be ~20, and the block and fitting would probably be less if you get them at the same time as the wheel.) 2nd hand bikes much less nickable, too.

I'm pretty sure it's fairly rub, frankly. I can get a no-less-rub new bike from Halford's for 75 quid

You'd still be better going 2ndhand IMO. You can get a really decent 2ndhand bike for 75 quid - go to a proper bike shop where they sell proper reconditioned ones and you'll be laughing. You could take the old bike in and see if they'd partx it too.

What's the bike you've got?

Lanutti Mamba
Go on, try to Google it - 2 hits, neither illuminating.

You appear to have discovered a new species of bike.

Try it with 2 Ns...
A Lannutti was auctioned by Wilsons in 2005 - not a Mamba though.

After reading that I think Halfords may well be the answer. Either that or a local indy bike shop second hand bargain.

Recycling is better than buying a new cheap cycle; it depends how desperate you are to ride it immediately.

Have you tried using your unicycle instead?

I suspect even closer examination will show that all the cables etc need replacing as well. Recycling's great, but if it costs more than replacing with something possibly better?

Ah! Well! That settles it.

The unicycle it is! Have you got a rucksack-type carrier for Jack?

I can see YB, in a cycle helmet, strapped to the back of OB, also in a cycle helmet, both atop a unicycle, OB juggling because he hasn't anything else to do with his hands.

That mental immage has left me in an insane fit of giggles!

You owe me a keyboard, G. That's a wonderful picture you've painted there :))

I've ridden on a pair of those, (or rather an earlier incarnation). I kid you not, they're worth an extra 2 mph. which is a LOT.

Ruddy 'eck, *how* much? Just as well you've got the unicycle in that case, innit. Imagine if you had to buy two of them!
