Bought my tax disc round about the 17th, didn't get round to putting it on the car.
Remembered today.
Can't find it.
Or the MOT certificate.
Which I need on Tuesday as I'm having it serviced and MOTd then.

Best chance is they're in the office. So I'll have to go in tomorrow. Not as bad as it sounds, we were going into Manc anyway. If I don't find them there though I shall freak right out.

Well, I hope they're there. (That's one reason we never tax ours til the end of the month, we'd lose the tax disc unless it went straight into the junk-box aka glove compartment)

Our nasty rotten car had its MOT today and failed, so needs work doing. It's just a pain that the garage will do MOTs on a Saturday, but not repairs.

You only need the MOT cert if the current one expires after the date of the test, so they can write out the new one for twelve months after the old one. I had mine done last week, told them the MOT had expired that day, and they didn't need to see the old one.

I put my tax disc in my wallet the week before Christmas, and forgot about it until a few days after the new year.

It's infuriating when you lose something important like that. I couldn't find my insurance certificate last time I taxed my car. I turned the house upside down and still couldn't find it, then, fortunately, discovered it still in the envelope they'd sent it in.

If you tell them that you can't find the previous MOT certificate, they might do it without, specially if they're the same people who did the previous one.

As a matter of interest, how will freaking right out manifest itself?

i.e. stand in the middle of the house and say,

"Spirits, can I please have my tax disc and MOT certificate back?"

It works quite often for me. (No I don't believe there actually are spirits nicking documents etc, I think it probably works by being a mental exercise which for some reason helps you spot or remember previously overlooked things).

You have my deepest sympathy btw as I have had to pay for a replacement insurance certificate and recently (when flogging the swedish brick) had a nasty moment when the purchaser pointed out that the MOT was not the one for the next 12 months but the one for the next 2. Found the MOT cert thank heavens (and the 2nd key which had also gone... somewhere). Late night headless chickening sux0rs.

Might be worth a try, seems to work for people who write letters to Fortean Times...
I think the most likely thing is that I took the ins cert out of the envelope they were all in, then when I was throwing away all the stuff to do with the car I sold a year ago... Although most of that is in the waiting-to-be-shredded pile. I'll have one more go through the waiting-to-be-filed pile, and first thing Monday I'll check I didn't leave it in my old office somehow. And then I'll give up and pay the 7 quid at the local DVLA office for a duplicate.

Mmm I didn't mention
a) that we'd got a shredder for Xmas - that I'd just been using on "out of date" car paperwork
and
b) the few panicky minutes I spent going through the shredded bits checking that none of the strands were greenish....

Went to my old office. Saw a brown envelope sticking out from under some papers near the junction of Paul's desk and the desk that was mine. Extracted it. It had DVLA Swansea on it.

It was empty.

Checked the paper recycling box, still some stuff in there with my writing on, but no MOT or tax disc.

Checked Ann's new office in case it got mixed up with her stuff. Nope.

Bah.

So you still haven't found it?

Have you tried your new office?

I hope it turns up soon. It's soooo infuriating.

I've given up. I've downloaded form V20 and will go to the local DVLA office for a duplicate later this week - when I get the car back from its service & MOT.
