Don't they sometimes bring in containers from other countries for their stores? Maybe checkout US/Canadian bike shops? Or do Raleigh not make for abroad?

They have subsidiaries in the USA, Canada, Ireland, blah blah blah.
But I can't find it anywhere. There used to be a roadrace bike called a Mercury, but that was a while back and this is an entry-level ATB/MTB.
Anyway the Costco one is an 18" frame and I reckon I'd want a 20 as it'd be almost exclusively for road use.

www.cyclestore.co.uk are really, really good - I got a £450 bike for £350 including panniers and locks. I am sure they have some really good cheaper bikes available.

Leisure Lakes are a decent shop, and not too far for you I guess?

latest offers here

Depends what you're looking for, but they've always been pretty decent for us.

Is it a special version of something else. Currys and other shops do exclusive model numbers on stuff like washing machines, so when you try and look it up to compare prices, you can never find it anywhere else.

I mailed them to ask. Will report back.

What's the bike place across the road from Morrisons like?

I've also bought a few bike bits from Blazing Saddles in Hebden.

It's a one-man operation, reckon he's been there about 599 years. No idea if he's any good.
Everything on Blazing Saddles' website is at least 100quid more than I was thinking of spending - I only want something that'll get me to within a 5 miles radius and back once or twice a week - but I will take the one the neighbour gave me in soon to ask if it's worth saving. I suspect not.

I got my first mountain bike from Decathlon for £100. It was pretty heavy and not the highest quality, but it was good enough to get started. Dunno if the Sheffield or Stockport branches would be easiest for you but they might be worth a try.

Well what interests me about the Costco one is that it looks a decent general spec and is only 153, probably retails for 199.97

I take that back - there are (at least) 2 bike shops called Blazing Saddles. The HB one doesn't list anything much at all on its website.
