It's all very well her wanting her dinner on the table when she gets home, but it all falls apart if she rings after I've started cooking to say she's missed the train and will be half an hour late...
I find that dinner *on the table* is a bit much to take as soon as I'm home. What happened to slippers/fireplace/pipe/sherry/newspaper for half an hour or so? Far more civilized.
A properly trained cook can make a meal that will be perfect when served at any time. Part of the skill is being able to anticipate any delays or be able to bring the meal forward at the drop of a chef's hat.
