I've not so far driven a 6-gear car. I regularly drive a 5-speed Sierra 2.3D and a couple of Morris Minors (a 1000 and a series MM, both 4-speed), and I have been known to try and get 5th. gear in the Minor 1000 once or twice. Doing that could potentially be very noisy, as reverse on the 1000 is back from where 5th would be if it had one. Luckily I didn't move the lever back.
Geoff has a '39 Morris pick-up truck with a 3-speed gearbox (it's off the road at the moment, though). That gearbox is a law unto itself, with very little, if any synchro left on second and top, and with a very big gap in ratio terms between them too - there's no third gear where there really needs to be one. It's good fun to drive, though; I hope it'll be back on the road some time this year.
