On September 15th 2001, Alex Zanardi crashed his ChampCar very very badly at the Lausitzring. He lost one leg just above the knee and the other just below. But he eventually came back to motor racing, with suitable mods to the controls, and has done well in ETCC and WTCC.
In the last couple of weeks he's had a go in a modified F1 provided by BMW. With just 4 15 minute sessions and the problem of having to steer with one hand at times so that he could operate the throttle with the other hand, plus a slightly awkward seating position, he managed to get to just 4 seconds off the pace. Pretty impressive. Apparently they velcroed one of his prosthetic feet to the brake pedal!
