The barriers are OK today, but both lifts are out. As Uni employees, we have to park on 8 and above - the folk who pay cash get the lower floors. Dunno what that deduction from my salary is if it's not another form of cash, but hey.

Prior to my move to this multistorey, I had a pass that got me into any of the Uni carparks. It failed once in 15 years. This compares well with the new system that works properly perhaps 30% of the time. It was wonderfully simple compared to a mag stripe, too: it was optical. The pass card was a sandwich, with holes cut out of the central layer, so that a bright light could be shone through and the holes read by a simple optoelectronic component. It was almost impossible to break the card - I used one for over a year that had cracked right across the middle and been sellotaped back together. Why dump something that had worked so well? "Progress", I expect.
