Last Saturday Jack did something on the lego.com site and afterwards Firefox started crashing on some content types. I fiddled a bit, then gave up and used System Restore to go back to Friday.
Yesterday, I tried to install 4OD as our Sky box failed to record the poker, and it seemed to to work, but a reboot seemed to sort it. I watched the poker. But Firefox is crashing on some content types again... 4OD also installed WMP11, which may be implicated. During a long series of fix attempts I discovered that IE won't see the internet at all, which means no Windows Updates unless I want to go and get them all manually, and I dunno which I need really. Can't recall installign any lately. Installing IE8 didn't help. At soem point Firefix did an update and seems to have rubbed out its old files, as System Restore leaves the machine with nothing on the end of the Firefox shortcut (from the way nothing loads, that's what it looks like, maybe there's something there that's Broken). So System Restore's out - leaves me with no browser at all now. Unless I dl the Firefiox installer and keep it around, I suppose.
But what makes IE unable to see the net when my other browser, my mailer, my news client, all can?
Which diagnostic tool should I use (don't say "A Linux install")
This is XPHome+SP3, very tempted to use the XP disk that accidentally came home from the Uni to upgrade, but then if I can't get Windows Updates it'll be horribly vulnerable.
