We started getting thunder rumbling in the distance between 3 and 3:30. It never seemed to get any closer, and although there were clouds to the west and north, we had mostly sun.
It got progressively more cloudy, and by 5 we could see lightning and the thunder was louder.
Shortly before 6 (the start of the US GP), the rain arrived - big blobs, but not many, you could amost count them. The lightning was more intense and the thunder getting loud. I actually disconnected the phone (and router) just in case.
Then between 6 and 7 we had 4" of rain. Sometimes the opposite hill disappears here, but today we couldn't see any of the other side of the valley at all. It came in over the TOP of the back door. It came in through closed windows. We used up more than a dozen towels stemming the flow. We lost the satellite signal, and had periodic losses of the terrestrial signal (and all mains power) for a few seconds.
By 8 it was all gone, so we took turns (because of Jack) to go out and have a look.
The road was flooded by the newsagent's - a Mini was stranded in the middle, lights on, nobody home. Another car was at the edge, diagonal to the road. I think it had been washed down the slope from the houses just above. Round by the railway station, the culvert had blown - the road had split and two 6' square pieces of tarmac that used to be road were at 45 degrees. One of the houses there had a yard full of foam from a drain that had backed up and I could see a lot of stuff on top of their kitchen table so I presume they'd been flooded.
The flood siren was going off up the road in Todmorden.
There may be photos later.
After the mayhem at the first turn, I'd lost interest in the GP anyway.
