Tom Tom the piper's son, stole a pig and away did run.
The pig was eat, Tom was beat, and Tom went howling down the street.
Got off lightly, didn't he? At some periods of history he'd have been hanged, or at least transported to Australia.
On CBeebies, they change these rhymes and fairy stories to leave out all the nasty violence. A bit like Bill Bailey's joke about the Englishman, Irishman, and Scotsman who went into a pub and had a really nice time. Except that Bill depends on our knowing the versions where they don't have a nice time to make it funny. I wonder what effect the CBeebies censorship has on the youth of tomorrow. As Chesterton said, kids know there are monsters, the stories teach them that the monsters can be defeated.
Anybody know a song about a tractor? (apart from the Nizlopi thing...)
Jack keeps asking for one, and we don't know any. Except maybe Bob the Builder, I suppose.
