I spent some considerable time just gazing out of the living room window at the sky. Cloud was coming over from the east, fairly quickly, but in patches - some of which only formed over our bit of the valley. Something to do with the sudden change in their ground clearance, I expect. The thing that made them worth watching was that though they were heading west, they were fluffy, insubstantial, and bits kept flying up off the top and going back the other way - layering in the winds, perhaps, I've noticed many times that we have winds in different directions at different heights (and ballonists depend on this for steering, istr).
So it was like watching a smear of something in a pan of hot water getting caught by a thermal current and rolling and streaming up and over itself. But over and over again, very very big, against blue sky. When it was the cloud that was actually only just forming it was even more impressive. Knocks yer lava lamps into a cocked hat.
